2008 Tier 1 White Jr. Cougars Last Team Standing at Border Battle AAA SuperSeries
The Burlington Jr. Cougars went 4-1 this past weekend winning the Mississauga Super Series AAA Border Battle.
Burlington started the tournament against the Chicago Fury who came into the weekend as the #3 ranked team in the US. A close battle saw Chicago score a late 3rd period goal to secure a 4-2 win over the Cougars.
Burlington bounced back in the next game with a 6-0 win against the Valley Forge Minutemen who came in as the #11 ranked team in the US.
Entering Day 2 of the tournament, the 2008 Burlington Jr. Cougars knew they could not lose another game if they wanted to stay in the hunt for the top spot. An early 7:30am game saw Burlington win 7-4 against the 20th ranked Philadelphia HC.
Burlington's fourth game of tournament was a must win against the Pittsburgh Penguins Elite 2008. A hard fought 4-2 victory vaulted Burlington to the top of the 2008 tournament standings in what may have been the best game of the season for the team.
In the final day of the tournament, the Burlington Jr. Cougars needed to win by 5 goals over the Nepean Raiders to secure the top spot. Burlington worked hard throughout the game but struggled to find the back of the net. Heading into the 3rd period the Cougars held a 2-0 advantage over the Raiders. A goal scored with 5:10 left in the 3rd period provided some hope. With 1:24 left Burlington again lit the lamp to gain a 4 goal advantage. Emotions continued to become tense in the last minute of play, but the Cougars did not give up. They were able to take the crown by scoring with 47 seconds left in the game beating Nepean with a final score of 5-0.
